Optimised Runway Delivery

One of the critical issue to safely managing reduced final approach spacing and runway occupancy is the impact of compression – the change of speed of different aircraft types as they reduce their speed in preparation for landing, removing any ATC required speed restrictions.  This makes it difficult for controllers to manage safe and consistent separations between aircraft pairs to the threshold ensuring Optimised Runway Delivery (ORD).

EUROCONTROL studied current practice of separation delivery for arrivals at major European airports. In the next future it is intended to perform the same study to analyze the practice of separation delivery for departures.
